Rows of broken image file icons line the wall as if someone has switched on a laptop that was left neglected for years. The JPEG (.jpg) file icons, unclickable and frozen, have been transformed into ceramic form with tactile materiality. Each scene, encapsulating some moment worth remembering, is now taxidermied in the form of a symbol: cold, drab, and inaccessible for viewing. Desktop evokes a sense of helplessness, alluding to something that once existed but can no longer be summoned, asking: If my memories are gone, can I no longer be myself? Canadian-born Alan Belcher (b.1957) is a conceptual artist working with photography and sculpture.
