Choi Sungim has long explored how everyday life and making art intertwine over the course of a life. Through the repeated act of collecting and connecting materials found in everyday surroundings, such as bread ties, beads and fabric, she gives form to the labor and time that often go unseen. For the artist, the home, garden, and quilt are not simply parts of everyday life, but places where housework, care, and making art take place together.

Golden Blanket takes its starting point from the bread ties used and discarded at the dining table every day. Small and lightweight, these ordinary materials are connected and woven together again and again, eventually forming a broad surface with a sense of weight and volume that spreads through the space like a blanket. The artist’s time, divided into small fragments and scattered throughout the day, takes material form through the repeated movement of her hands.

The golden color of the work carries the time spent on housework, raising children, caring for others, and returning to her art after periods of pause. The work does not present a life of preparing meals, caring for others, and returning to the bread ties to continue making art as a story of sacrifice or endurance. Instead, it shows the persistence of an artist who has made a place for art by gradually piecing together the small amounts of time available to her. In a life where everyday life and art are not separate, these seemingly insignificant remnants of daily life gather the weight of many years and take on a presence that is difficult to overlook.
