Hiroshi Sugimoto’s most iconic series, Theatres, visualizes invisible time. For this ongoing project that began in 1976, the artist has photographed theaters, and cinemas around the world. He captures the entire movie, from the opening scene to the closing credits, in a single photograph using a long exposure. Only the image of the film remains as a completely white screen. Instead, the interiors of the classic theaters, historic cinemas, or grand opera houses emerge faintly, illuminated by the bright light from the screen. For more than 50 years, Hiroshi Sugimoto has created numerous thought-provoking series, demonstrating his extensive interests and ideas that span the arts, history, science, religion, and Western and Eastern philosophy.
