WHEN IN THE COURSE OF HUMAN EVENTS, (2019-2020), Ink, correction fluid on microfiber paper, 596.9 x 99 cm. Courtesy the Artist and Galerie Tanja Wagner

"When in the course of human events..." A massive scroll unfolds across the gallery floor, beginning with the opening line of the American Declaration of Independence. Hundreds of sentences written in white correction fluid on black microfiber were completed by citizens. Unlike declarations urging urgent action, these describe everyday, mundane acts. Daou covers previous text with correction fluid and writes anew, with faint traces of underlying words never fully erased, revealing the process of mistakes, corrections, and restarts. Universal experiences that transcend borders and languages intertwine and overlap, creating a landscape where countless voices resonate simultaneously. The work demonstrates moments of life we fundamentally share and human resilience, even in a fractured world. Lebanon-born, New York-based Annabel Daou is recognized for participatory works that collect conversations with citizens and transform text into visual art.
