Survival: You are so complex…, 2019,Carrara white marble bench, 43.2 x 106.7 x 50.8 cm. Collection of SK Inc.

296 rusted metal tablets bear political messages collected from social media, etched like ancient script. Golden canvases cover censored government documents with gold leaf, lavishly displaying the concealment of information. A marble bench bears the inscription: "You are so complex that you don’t respond to danger." Holzer solidifies the toxicity of language that volatilizes in digital space into permanent material, capturing modern political language that has become a weapon of sharp attack and our desensitization to it. She explores the relationship between language and power, the tension between what we believe we know and what remains forever unknowable. Born in Ohio, USA, Jenny Holzer  has spent 50 years dissecting and documenting the language of our times, transforming every surface from billboards to marble into a stage for text.
