Using oil paint with minimal medium, Kim Hanyoung dabs pigment with his brush tip, accumulating the paint's inherent viscosity and weight on canvas. Countless repeated brushstrokes create small, horn-like protrusions that gather to weave a surface as intricate as tweed fabric. His repetitive brushwork is intense and silent, like wordless meditation. In the process of resisting the paint's materiality and building layer upon layer, time becomes matter and matter becomes evidence of time. While appearing as peaceful color flow from afar, closer inspection reveals complex textures and depths created by each minutely different touch. In an era of rapidly consumed images, his work demands a different mode of viewing, questioning the act of seeing itself rather than delivering direct messages. Korean artist Kim Hanyoung has long explored painting's essence, using the most fundamental materials of paint, brush, and canvas to present new possibilities for contemporary painting through grand landscapes created by patience and accumulation.
